Google has begun to accept the application for its doctoral fellowship program. The program is only available for selective countries, namely Australia, China and East Asia, Europe, Africa, India, the United States and Canada. Google PhD fellowships directly support graduate students while they pursue their doctorate, and also connect them to a Google research mentor. Encouraging and maintaining strong relationships with the academic community is one of Google’s top priorities. The Google PhD fellowship program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students who perform exceptional work in computer science and related research areas.

Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. Scholarships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the following fields:

  • Algorithms, optimizations and markets.
  • Computational Neuroscience
  • The person-computer interaction
  • Machine learning
  • Perception of machines, speech technology and artificial vision.
  • Mobile computing
  • Natural language processing (including retrieval and extraction of information)
  • Privacy & Security
  • Programming languages ​​and software engineering
  • Quantum computing
  • Structured management of data and databases.

Eligibility

Students nominated in North America and Europe.

  • Universities should only nominate students who meet the following requirements:
    • Full-time graduate students pursuing a doctorate.
    • US students UU / Canada must have at least their third year of a PhD program before the semester or quarter of the year in which the scholarship begins. The nominating university will be asked to confirm the start date of the student’s doctoral program.
    • European students must be in at least their second year of a PhD program with the same previous rules.
    • The beneficiary must remain a full-time active student in a PhD program for at least two academic years of the award or lose the award.
    • Google employees, and their spouses, children and members of their household are not eligible.
    • Students who are already supported by an industry comparable award are not eligible.

Students nominated in Australia, China and East Asia

  • Universities should only nominate students who meet the following requirements:
    • Enrolled in a participating university and nominated by that university.
    • Full-time graduate students pursuing a doctorate.
    • Complete the graduate courses for the fall of the award year, when the scholarship begins.
    • Google employees, and their spouses, children and members of their household are not eligible.
    • Students who are already supported by an industry comparable award are not eligible.

Direct applicants students in Africa and India

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa or India. Applicants who are currently in their first year of a part-time PhD program and transferred to full-time positions are also welcome to apply.
  • If you are already in a doctorate program, you must be an early stage doctoral student when you apply, that is, you have completed one year or less of your doctorate.Students must remain enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the scholarship or lose the award.
  • Current undergraduate, masters students and professionals can apply. The Google Fellowship award will depend on whether the winner registers in a full-time PhD program of an African or Indian university in Computer Science or related areas within the calendar year of the scholarship, or the award will be lost.
    • Applicants enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program must be current full-time students at an African or Indian university.
    • Professionals must be employed / affiliated with an organization registered in Africa or India, and receipt of the award depends on whether they join a full-time doctoral program at an African or Indian university within the award calendar year.
    • The granting of the Google scholarship does not mean admission to the doctoral program of a university. The awardee must also complete the doctoral admission process of the respective institute / university in which he wishes to register for a doctorate.
    • The Google Fellowship grant will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institute / university where the candidate registers for the doctoral program.
  • Google employees, and their spouses, children and members of their household are not eligible.
  • Students who are already supported by an industry comparable award are not eligible.

Eligible regions: Australia, China and East Asia, Europe, Africa, India, the United States and Canada

APPLICATION PROCESS

The details of each scholarship vary by region.

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to send the following material in a single PDF file:

  • Student CV with links to the website and publications (if available)
  • Transcription of current and previous academic records.
  • Research / dissertation proposal (recommended length 4-5 pages, no more than 8)
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the work of the candidate (at least one of the thesis advisor)
  • Short CV (1 page) of the advisor

Africa

You will need the following documents to complete an application:

  • Curriculum vitae of the applicant with links to publications (if available)
  • Curriculum of a page of the advisor of the student’s doctoral program
  • Transcripts available (score sheets) from the first year / semester of the degree to date
  • Research proposal (maximum two pages).
  • Three letters of recommendation from those who are familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one comes from the thesis advisor in the case of current doctoral students).

India

You will need the following documents to complete an application:

  • Curriculum vitae of the applicant with links to publications (if available)
  • Transcripts available (score sheets) from the first year / semester of the degree to date
  • Statement of research purpose (maximum two pages)
  • Three letters of recommendation from those who are familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one comes from the thesis advisor in the case of current doctoral students).

North America and Europe

The application window of the Google Phell Fellowship program for North America and Europe is now closed for this year. Applications for the 2020 program will open on November 1, 2019.

Australia, China and East Asia

In Australia, China and East Asian students must be nominated by an eligible university. The nomination instructions are sent to the eligible universities and the presentations must be provided directly by an official representative of the university. The invitations for the 2019 PhD Scholarship Program in China / Hong Kong / Japan / South Korea will be delivered in April 2019. And the application window will close at 11:59:59 PM CST on May 31st. 2019

Invitations to the 2019 PhD Program in Australia will be delivered in March 2019 and recipients will be notified in June 2019.

Africa and India

In India and Africa, students can apply directly during the application period, which opens every February in India and every November in Africa. Applications are open to students in computer science and related areas of any Indian or African university. Please, check your frequently asked questions for more information.
